Kathy Confer

Editor, Writer, and Events Facilitator

I’m the new kid on the block, having joined the Digital Media Center (DMC) team in September of 2007, but I’ve been employed at the University of Minnesota for 21 years. My primary responsibilities at the DMC focus on editing, so let me know if you see any typos or grammatical errors on our Web site or print materials! I also help with DMC marketing and events, particularly the Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) seminar series and activities sponsored by our St. Paul studio in 69 McNeal Hall. Attend an upcoming DMC event, introduce yourself, and let me know how we’re doing.

Before coming to the University in 1986, I worked in the Provost’s Office at the University of Pittsburgh, where I also pursued graduate studies in child development. I grew up in Bradford, Pennsylvania—an oil boomtown that’s also the home of Zippo lighters—then moved to the “big city” to attend Carlow College (now University). I relocated to the Twin Cities in 1986 to take a job as assistant to the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the U; in the mid-90s, I had the opportunity to staff the information technology strategic planning initiative and work with the University’s first chief information officer in establishing the Office of Information Technology. After completing Y2K-related duties, I transferred to Academic and Distributed Computing Services where I worked for seven years doing communications, marketing, and special events activities.

Outside of the office, you’ll find me rowing on the Mississippi River (it’s never too late to learn!), looking at birds, exploring small towns in Minnesota with my husband, or making the cats (Alex and Allegra) purr.
