Fellowship Project
Carlson-Lombardi will develop interactive, Web-based instructional materials for second-year Spanish classes Spanish 1003 and 1004. Contextualized around cultural themes and related to the topics presented in the second-year textbook, these materials will reflect issues pertaining to the Chicano-Latino community in the Twin Cities. Themes to be developed are:
- human rights topics in Latin America and in the United States;
- environmental issues;
- the world of entertainment;
- politics and the Chicano-Latino community;
- nutrition and culinary arts; and
- social concerns.
The second-year language Web site will include:
- video clips;
- interviews with individuals in the community;
- visual images (visual art, photography, local images, etc.);
- audioclips; and
- interactive, contextualized grammar and listening exercises.
Students in the second-year program are particularly in need of authentic listening activities, and providing these exercises online will enable them to access audio/video files and complete activities at their own pace. These materials will be delivered on the Web site and on a CD-ROM.
By linking these themes not only to interactive grammar activities but also to local subject matter, Carlson-Lombardi will fulfill her goal of improving students' language proficiency while developing and honing their cultural competency at the same time. Via the Web-based activities, students will be exposed to the cultural richness the Twin Cities has to offer, while still following the current 1003-04 curriculum.
The scope of this project goes beyond the second year courses at the University of Minnesota. As Faculty Coordinator Assistant for the College in the Schools Program (CIS) in Spanish, Carlson-Lombardi will make these materials available to the CIS high school teachers and their students from the local metro area and greater Minnesota.
These activities may also become models for first-year Spanish language projects at the University.
