Susan J. Henly
Susan Henly is an associate professor of nursing in the School of Nursing. She is a psychometrician and a nurse who has combined her interests by focusing on quantitative methods for pattern recognition in data applied to problems in the health sciences. You can read more about her career on the American Statistical Association Web site.
Teaching Activities
Interests
Henly is interested in the following teaching topics:
- quantitative reasoning
- learning through discipline-based, technology-enhanced instruction
- research utilization
- American Indian nursing education
- explicit instruction for the development of empathy using autobiography and fiction
University Courses
Henly has taught the following University of Minnesota courses:
- Nurs 4206: Honors Nursing Theory and Research
- Nurs 4404: Applied Nursing Research and Research Utilization
- Nurs 8121: Theoretical Foundations of Health-Related Behaviors
- Nurs 8170: Research in Nursing
- Psy 3801: Introduction to Statistics
Research Activities
Interests
Henly is interested in conducting research in the following areas:
- psychometric methods for health sciences research
- hierarchical data structures
- longitudinal studies
- linear mixed effects models
- health pathways/trajectories
- clinical course
- symptom management
TEL Experience
Henly's experiences with the instructional use of technology have occurred mostly out of class in the following areas:
- basic operations and concepts (the use of Medline, CINAHL, and other health sciences bibliographic databases by students in nursing research courses);
- technology productivity tools (the use of handheld calculators by beginning statistics students and the use of word processors to facilitate composition of group-authored papers by nursing students in clinical and research classes); and
- technology research tools (the use of statistical packages for data analysis by thesis/dissertation students and the use of the Web for data collection in survey research by research and thesis students).
Fellowship Project
Nurs 3710: Measurement and Statistics for Practice and Research is a new required course for undergraduate nursing majors. Students learn quantitative literacy and numerical reasoning skills used in clinical practice and to conduct research in nursing and other health and human service disciplines. The course will be Web-enhanced. The students will learn measurement and statistical concepts and skills with electronic modules. As part of her DMC faculty fellowship activities, Henly plans to:
- add Web-based methods to her repertoire of instructional skills;
- develop a course Web page for Nurs 3710 (including course information and communication tools, eight key-concept-focused learning modules, and a virtual learning environment for group activities); and
- design a systematic plan for evaluating outcomes following students' use of each learning module.
Consultation Areas
Henly is available to consult with faculty members about the following educational technology topics:
- coordinating in-class and Web-based aspects of instruction;
- facilitating virtual study groups; and
- the development of online learning modules.
