Kevin L. Smith
Kevin Smith is a teaching specialist in the School of Nursing. He teaches in the family nurse practitioner area and specializes in teaching advanced health assessment to advanced practice nursing graduate students. In 1998, through a Robert Wood Johnson Partnerships for Training grant, he worked with colleagues from five Minnesota nurse practitioner programs to develop a Web-based health assessment course. He has modified and updated the course, and it was offered at the University in 2001 and 2002. In 1999, through a National Library of Medicine grant, he also developed a Web-based learning module for students about using electronic resources to study selected herbal remedies. Most recently, through a TELIGN grant, he adapted a graduate-level primary care course for delivery through WebCT. He was selected as a DMC faculty fellow for spring and summer 2003.

Fellowship Project
Smith plans to develop online, case-based, interactive learning modules using a "problem-based" learning approach for the class, Primary Care for Advanced Practice Nursing Students. Students will use the modules to learn the process of performing a routine health maintenance examination with health promotion measures incorporated into it. He will use humor throughout the modules to enhance the learning environment.
His goal is to enhance learners' individual problem-solving and critical-thinking skills related to heath maintenance and health promotion.
TEL Consultation Areas
Smith can help other faculty members use a Web-based teaching module approach in a skill-based course. He also can help them set up Web-based content with WebCT software.
