Fellowship Project
Hult plans to develop and implement a new four-semester Norwegian language course which will be delivered in an online environment. She will integrate traditional instructional materials with visual images, video and audio files, and interactive exercises and deliver them on a CD-ROM. She also will use WebCT software to create an online community where students can explore authentic cultural sites, participate in chat and discussion groups, receive assignments, and take quizzes.
According to Hult, since Norwegian language courses are offered at few colleges and universities, "this project has the potential to attract students from across the country who do not have access to a traditional Norwegian language [course]. While educational software can quickly become obsolete, this is less likely to be the case in a language course where the desired outcome is competency, not acquisition of factual material, as in the sciences, and when the course content can be controlled [with] WebCT [software, so] changes can be made quickly and easily. [Students also can use the CD-ROM] independently without the WebCT component, and [it] is deliberately being designed to include nontopical references."
She hopes her project will enable her to evaluate "how effective an online language course can be, given the importance of face-to-face interaction in traditional language learning."
TEL Consultation Areas
Hult can provide other faculty members with an online course development model for other language units and help them use WebCT software.
