In response to the growing number of educational technologies available, the WebVista Faculty Advisory Committee was renamed the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) in August 2006 and its mission expanded. We work with its members and other Office of Information Technology staff members and collegiate and coordinate campus faculty, staff, and student representatives to explore the use of, implement, evaluate, and support technologies that are or might be used for teaching and learning at the University of Minnesota.
In 2005, the University of Minnesota began an effort to transform itself into one of the top three public research universities in the world within the next decade. Academic technology will have a major role in helping the University reach this goal. In fact, the following Office of Information Technology (OIT) mission statement reflects the value that technology will have in helping the University reach its goals:
OIT creates institutional competitive advantage through technologies developed, maintained, and supported in partnership with campuses, colleges, and departments. These technologies add direct value to students, faculty, staff, and departments by providing applications and services in teaching, learning, research, basic technology, infrastructure, business, personal productivity, and collaboration.
The OIT mission statement also aligns with the March 30, 2005 University of Minnesota Administrative Strategic Planning Task Force report that encourages us to pursue opportunities to become more strongly service oriented and transparent in delivering these services. To ensure that academic technologies at the University of Minnesota meet the instructional needs of faculty, instructors, and staff members; help enhance learning, teaching, and research; and are appropriately supported by the Office of Information Technology, an Academic Technology Advisory Committee has been formed. Specifically members will provide advice and input about and help evaluate issues surrounding
Members are drawn from different colleges, institutes, schools, and campuses to ensure that the diverse instructional needs of University faculty members and instructors and the diverse learning needs of students are represented.
If you have questions, suggestions, or issues you would like the committee to address, send e-mail to one of the committee co-chairs: Jen Mein at jen@umn.edu or Linda Jorn at ljorn@umn.edu.
