Digital Media Center

Office of Information Technology

Kim Wilcox

Senior Educational Technology Consultant

In addition to working one-on-one with faculty members as a consultant and teaching in a few University Technology Training Center (UTTC) short courses, I act as the Digital Media Center (DMC) consultation coordinator. In this role, I help to orient new consultants, make sure that consultation requests are met in a timely manner and, this year, will be working to establish even better consultation processes, tracking, and feedback. I've also been involved in the opening of our St. Paul office in 69 McNeal Hall.

In addition, I also help manage the DMC Faculty Fellowship Program, which provides release time for faculty members in support of their work on technology-enhanced learning projects. Lauren Marsh and I write application materials, help review applications, and develop and implement the program. I also help teach in the DMC's Digital Teaching Workshop.

Having taught at the university level for a number of years, I am very interested in active and cooperative learning techniques, and in their successful use in online environments. One of my professional goals is to help instructors learn to use technology and to integrate it into their teaching in useful and effective ways. I spend a lot of time, through teaching UTTC short courses or providing DMC consultations, working with faculty members who are using WebVista, a course management system. In addition, I am particularly interested in helping instructors make their course Web sites accessible to as many users as possible by making them familiar with the University of Minnesota Web Accessibility Standards. A personal goal is to gain more expertise in multimedia applications, including audio and video.

I'm a biologist by training, with degrees from the University of Cincinnati:

  • Bachelor of Science, biology, 1975;
  • Master of Science, biological sciences, 1977; and
  • Doctor of Philosophy, cum laude, biological sciences, 1982.

I came to the University of Minnesota in 1982 on an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in behavioral genetics. I spent three years in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Tom Bouchard on the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart—a wonderful experience. I then spent several years working with Professor Elving Anderson and others studying aspects of the genetics of epilepsy. Along the way I did some teaching through extension, and my growing interest in science education eventually led me to seek a faculty position at the General College, where I taught introductory anatomy and physiology and general biology. It was there that I "fell in love with the Web," which eventually led me to the Digital Media Center!

When I'm not working, I enjoy reading mysteries and science fiction, taking photographs (mostly of flowers) and, with my husband, bird and critter watching, walking or hiking, listening to the blues, and going to movies. Another of our passions is scuba diving — roll your mouse over the photograph on this page to see me scuba diving during a 2006 trip to Belize. In October 2006, we adopted an adorable one-year-old dachshund/golden retriever mix, whom we named Digger. He has turned us into gushing, indulgent doggy parents, and added petting, playing and dog walking to the top of our interest lists. And, whenever we have the chance, we get back to Ohio to spend time with my family, including two wonderful grandchildren!
