Lauren Marsh

Senior Educational Technology Consultant

I joined the Digital Media Center (DMC) in 2003. My responsibilities include program development and management of our DMC Faculty Fellowship Program which promotes leadership, scholarship, and best practices in the area of technology-enhanced learning (TEL). I am an instructor and administrator for the TA Web Certification Program, an intensive 30-hour program designed to give graduate TAs technology, pedagogy, and design skills. As a consultant, I help people make decisions about using technology to enhance learning. I am also part of the Publications Team, which involves researching and writing content for the DMC's Web site.

My areas of expertise include instructional design, planning and preparing for virtual meetings using virtual conferencing tools, and using tools like PowerPoint and UMConnect Presenter to promote active learning. My background in teaching shapes my interests in technology: I'm interested in helping faculty to shape technology-enhanced learning environments that promote deep learning and critical thinking.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in English. My research focused on the rise of "useful knowledge" in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. I wrote and developed educational courseware at Plato Learning for three years before returning to the University to work at the Digital Media Center. I'm delighted to be here working at the intersections of technology and education—it's a brave new world!
